If you play R-g7, couldnt black play K-b8? whatever the next move, black king could potentially escape via c7. Just a thought.

After 1. Qh8 Qf4 2. Kd7+ Qb8 as you mentioned, white wins with Q-a1.

I noticed you left off the phrase “mate in 2 or mate in 3″
Is this because of
1. Qh8 Qf4
2. Kd7+ Qb8
If white trades queens, Black gets a draw.

RxR doesn’t work because it merely exchanges rooks whereby the correct answer wins a rook.

As an alternate solution, how about RxR It provides the same results, but allows the rook to protect the pawn, giving the king a little more movement.

Sorry, but that allows the black king to take g4.
